Transforming traditional education through technology and preparing students with the skills necessary to compete in today's hyperconnected world are two of the tasks that President Peña Nieto promised at the beginning of his administration. And he “delivered”: he delivered 2 million laptops and tablets (one million in the 2013-2014 school year and another million in 2015-2016) to fifth and sixth grade children from different entities in the country. The investment was 6,000 million pesos (mp). However, he forgot some “little details”, such as that the equipment could be stolen, disabled or thrown away (an ending similar to that of former President Fox's failed program Enciclomedia). For example, what happened in Colima, Tabasco and Sonora, where 240,000 devices that were delivered at the end of October 2013 stopped working two years later because the license expired.
Million pesos thrown into the trash! Wouldn't it have been better to invest that money in building more schools, improving existing ones and professionalizing teachers? Doing a quick survey on the benefits and usefulness of tablets among teachers and mothers of fifth and sixth grade students, I found the following: The tablets Bahamas Mobile Number List contain practice exercises and reinforcement of the knowledge learned in the classroom. These exercises are similar to those contained in textbooks, but more limited in number. The computers are slow and, sometimes, their contents do not match the programs. Tablets are not really very useful, rather they are a distraction, since children use them to connect to social networks, rather than to learn. As children take the equipment home, they download applications that have nothing to do with classes. • Some children break down or lose equipment, and this prevents them from working with the entire group.
The use of tablets will not continue and the same thing will happen as with Enciclomedia [it was canceled after years of limitations and 25,000 million pesos lost]. Not all teachers are trained to operate the equipment and only some receive training. Others do not use them because there is no internet at school. Many equipment is broken and a school year can go by without it being repaired or replaced. What do parents say? • Children use tablets little. Those who received the equipment when they were in fifth grade and are now in sixth grade only use it to play, since the teachers did not burden them with the program for the new school year. At first, their children did not download other applications, as they were prohibited from doing so, but later they began to download games and social networks.
