this episode of IGE Community we introduce you to Germán Pajares; a mining engineer who, attracted by gemology, decided to pursue several studies at the IGE, to end up becoming a jewelry appraiser and buyer. His expertise has also led him to give talks and conferences. Without further ado, we give way to the interview in which you will be able to learn about his career. What do you do for a living? On the one hand, I am currently working at the Bonhill company as a buyer for the individual area. We buy both brand name and vintage jewelry, such as high-end watches or diamonds and resell them in our second-hand stores in the United States. And on the other hand, on a personal level I carry out official appraisals for clients of jewelry or watch pieces for insurance issues, inheritance distributions, because they want to know their value in the secondary market, etc.
What aspects of your work do you find most rewarding? I think it is a job in which it is impossible to get bored , because you see unique pieces of jewelry every day, and in which you also have to be continually learning and training, not only because of the launch of new models on the market every year, but also because of the emergence of new treatments to improve the color and purity of Cell Phone Number Lists also very comforting to becertain gems and the manufacture of increasingly better imitations of watches and jewelry. It is also very comforting to be able to advise the client correctly , whether it is for sale or for an appraisal report on their pieces, since when it comes to jewelry I often see clients somewhat lost as to the real value of the pieces. that they have in their hands. What studies did you complete to become professional in your sector? I studied Higher Mining Engineering here at the IGE, which has been very useful for me to understand well the entire diamond supply cycle, for example, from when it is extracted from the mine until it reaches a jewelry store window. In our degree we already had gemology and geology subjects.
Subsequently, I completed all the IGE studies , that is: Diploma in Gemology , Diamond Grading Expert , Color Stone Grading Expert and the Jewelry Appraisal course . During my stay in NY I also took different courses on colored stones at the GIA (American Gemological Institute), and I am an appraiser and member of AETA (Spanish Association of Jewelry Appraisers). What has the Spanish Gemological Institute given you? The IGE has always been very present in my professional career almost from the beginning, since it was (previous director of the laboratory) who recommended me years ago to start working at Circa, which represented a qualitative leap and I will always be grateful to him. thus. In more recent years, the IGE has invited me to give talks and conferences , being the perfect forum to expose the reality of the sector in which I work. And, of course, at a training level the IGE has had an incredible weight in my career , that is undoubtedly, and many of the things I learned in the courses have been useful to me in my professional work.
